Gestational Surrogacy for Straight and Gay Couples in Vancouver, Toronto, and throughout Canada
Gestational surrogacy is an option for gay and straight couples who want children, but cannot have them due to an absent or irregular uterus. Gestational surrogacy involves a carrier whose uterus is used to incubate the embryo for the duration of the pregnancy. At IVF New Jersey, we offer gestational carrier services to Canadian residents including those in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, a service currently not offered by fertility clinics in Canada. With assistance from the law practice of Melissa Brisman, we help our patients understand and adhere to complex surrogacy laws, which vary by country. For more information, contact us today.
What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy uses another woman’s healthy uterus to carry a baby to term. This is an option for couples where the woman cannot produce eggs, her uterus is unhealthy or missing, or where there is a life-threatening risk for the mother if the fetus is carried to term. Surrogacy is also an option for gay couples who wish to become biological parents of a child. Couples can have a genetically-related child without the risks associated with pregnancy.
There are two types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational. Traditional surrogacy is an option for couples where the woman’s eggs are unhealthy or she cannot provide them for fertilization. Instead, sperm from the woman’s partner or a sperm donor is combined with an egg from the surrogate, making the surrogate biologically related to the fetus.
Gestational surrogacy is used when the woman’s uterus is unable to endure pregnancy, but she can still produce healthy eggs. Since the embryo consists of an egg from the woman and sperm from her partner, the fetus is not biologically related to the surrogate, but instead to the couple.
