Infertility problems happen to men just the same as women, though obviously for men, they have different issues to deal with. Much of the time, these issues are related to sperm quality and the ability for sperm to properly function following ejaculation. The team at our center for IVF in New Jersey wants to go over some of the most common causes of male infertility right now.
Low Sperm Count
Low sperm count involves just what it sounds like. (Generally speaking, a normal sperm count is approximately 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen.) While low sperm count doesn’t make it impossible to successfully conceive, it does make things more difficult.
Poor Sperm Motility
Sperm motility refers to the ability for a man’s sperm to swim properly. When sperm has poor motility, it cannot swim that well. This will result in problems for the sperm navigating and making it to the egg.
Low Volume of Semen
Low semen volume means that during ejaculation, a less than normal amount of semen is released. During normal ejaculation, between 1 and 5.6 milliliters is released. As with low sperm count, while it is not impossible to successfully conceive, low semen volume makes it more difficult.
No Sperm Present (Azoospermia)
If a man has azoospermia, that means that is no sperm present in his semen. Conception is completely impossible in these cases. Medications and some other treatments may be able to address this issue.
Varicoceles
A varicocele refers to an enlargement of the veins that are located inside of the scrotum. These can affect the quality and volume of sperm and may also affect the size of the testicles.
Erectile Dysfunction
Many men experience erectile dysfunction, which obviously makes intercourse and conception difficult. There are plenty of ways to remedy this, including medication and other options.
