UK Egg Retrieval Process

Egg Retrieval for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) for Couples in Britain - London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast

After the egg donor is selected and confirms that she would like to donate her eggs to an infertile couple, the egg retrieval part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process can begin. The process involves several steps to prepare the donor and the recipient for the procedure. Though the actual procedure is short, the preparation process can take several months. Egg Retrieval Process

To prepare for the eggs to be retrieved from the donor, the donor must take hormones to stimulate her ovaries to release multiple eggs at one time. She must also sync her menstrual cycle to that of the recipient. This part of the process takes the longest.

Menstrual Synchronization

The menstrual cycles of the donor and the recipient must be in sync so that the donor does not ovulate before the uterus of the recipient is ready to receive the eggs. The donor's natural cycle is suppressed through the use of hormones. Within a few weeks, the cycles of the donor and recipient should match up.

Stimulation of the Ovaries

Once the menstrual cycles of the donor and recipient match, the ovaries are stimulated. For about 7 to 10 days before the embryo is implanted, the recipient begins to take hormones to thicken the lining of the uterus. When the lining has reached its target thickness, the donor starts to take hormones to stimulate her ovaries to release multiple eggs. During this time, the donor's ovaries are monitored to make sure they are not over-stimulated.

Egg Retrieval

When stimulated, the donor's ovaries will drop multiple eggs, a signal that it is time to schedule surgery to retrieve the eggs. The recipient will take another hormone, progesterone, to thicken the uterus and increase the chances that the fertilized embryo will adhere to it.

The egg retrieval procedure takes less than 30 minutes. The donor is given anesthesia to alleviate discomfort. After a tiny ultrasound probe is inserted into the cervix, the mature egg sacs are suctioned out with a small needle. The eggs are then placed in a Petri dish and prepared for fertilization.

The egg retrieval and embryo transfer procedures are the only ones that must be done in our offices on New Jersey. We will happily work with your local physician to handle all the preliminary and post-procedure lab work and check ups.

Egg Donation After Care

The donor's menstrual cycle and hormones will return to normal levels about a month after the procedure. However, she should be aware that she will be very fertile until her hormones return to normal levels.
