Embryo transfer is the last step in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure, after the eggs have been harvested, the sperm collected, and the sperm fertilizes the eggs an embryos are formed. During the embryo transfer, the healthy embryos—those that have cells that are dividing at a normal rate—are implanted into the recipient’s uterus. Recipient Medical Screening
Before the recipient can be implanted with the viable embryos, she must have a complete medical screening to ensure that her uterus is healthy enough to carry a fetus full-term. Since the recipient will have to take hormones to thicken the lining of the uterus prior to being implanted with the embryos, her body must be healthy and able to handle the influx of hormones. This medical screening makes certain that this is possible.
The Embryo Transfer Process
Embryo transfer is an outpatient procedure that typically takes less than half an hour. It occurs between 1 to 5 days after the fertilization process has created an embryo. Some embryos divide many times over the five days that follow retrieving the egg. These embryos are more likely to successfully implant into the uterus, allowing us to implant fewer embryos into the uterus, creating a safer pregnancy for mother and child.
The procedure is quick and requires no anesthesia. Placed in a catheter with a tiny amount of fluid, the embryos are placed in the uterus. The patient is advised to relax for the duration of the day. Pregnancy success rates associated with embryo transfer for those using donor eggs or their own is comparable to that of natural conception. For women under the age of 36, those who conceive after IVF have a pregnancy success rate of 37 percent. For women between the ages of 36 to 39, the pregnancy success rate is 28 percent. Finally, for women over the age of 40, the pregnancy success rate is 13 percent.
