In vitro fertilization (IVF) has allowed couples to conceive children who otherwise could not through other means, especially if the couple uses donor eggs. The success rate of IVF is high, with much of its success dependent on variables such as the health of the embryos and sperm. The mother’s age is also a factor in the success of conceiving with a donor egg, with the highest percentage of conception seen in those under the age of 36. What Is IVF?In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a popular assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment for couples who cannot conceive through other means due to tubal factor infertility, endometriosis, or male infertility. Using state-of-the-art technology, the process chooses the sperm and eggs—from the woman or a donor—that will prove the most successful during fertilization, fertilizes them in the lab, and implants fertilized embryos into the uterus. The end result is pregnancy.
IVF Process For those who are not using their biological eggs, the IVF process begins with selecting a donor. Once our experienced egg donor coordinator has selected a suitable match and the couple has approved, the next step is egg retrieval in which the donor’s body is prepared to drop egg sacs that will be taken and the recipient’s uterus is prepared to receive the fertilized embryos.
While the eggs are being collected from the donor, the recipient’s partner—or a sperm donor—supplies semen to the laboratory. From the sample of the egg and sperm, our specialists will select the healthiest of each to be combined. This is done in a Petri dish or through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection—where a needle injects sperm into an egg. Once the egg is inseminated with sperm, it is monitored for fertilization. Healthy eggs from a donor often have the highest chances for conception. The resulting embryos are monitored for several days to make sure that the cells are dividing normally. The blastocysts that divide normally will be transferred and implanted into the recipient’s uterus.
