Other infertility treatment at IVF New Jersey includes assisted hatching, gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), and advice regarding sperm donation. Assisted hatching is an IVF procedure that thins the membrane surrounding the embryo in order to help it escape, or "hatch," from the membrane prior to uterine implantation. Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is an infertility treatment option for those women who, for religious or other reasons, would prefer a more "natural" fertilization process. Read on for further explanation of both of these procedures and of sperm donation.
Assisted Hatching On the day of an embryo transfer at IVF New Jersey, the embryos are examined to determine the thickness of the zona pellucidae (the membrane surrounding the cells of an embryo). If the zona is found to be thick, or if there is decreased embryo quality, then "assisted hatching" is performed. Assisted hatching involves a microsurgical technique whereby the zona is thinned, usually by applying a thinning solution to a small portion of the zona. This assists the embryo in escaping or "hatching" from the zona; this IVF procedure occurs prior to implantation in the uterine lining. Studies have shown that assisted hatching may significantly improve embryo implantation rates in some cases. If you are interested in this infertility treatment, contact IVF New Jersey. Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) GIFT is an infertility treatment that involves the placement of eggs and sperm into the fallopian tube. This IVF procedure is a two-step process. First, following stimulation with fertility medications, eggs are retrieved surgically via transvaginal aspiration. This is followed by laparoscopy while under general anesthesia; the egg and sperm mixture is placed deep within one or both fallopian tubes. This infertility treatment has fallen out of favor at most successful IVF programs, since IVF pregnancy rates in those programs are equal to or surpass those resulting from GIFT. Additionally, GIFT requires a more invasive procedure with the use of general anesthesia. We offer this infertility treatment at IVF New Jersey to those patients who, for religious or other reasons, prefer the more "natural" fertilization process that takes place in the fallopian tubes during the GIFT procedure.
