Sperm Donation at IVF New Jersey

Donor sperm is an infertility treatment option at IVF New Jersey for intrauterine inseminations (IUI) as well as in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. There are many sperm banks available. They vary with respect to a number of things including donor screening, availability of information about the donor, donor photos, profile types, identity release, amount of testing, and cost.

In general, most sperm banks perform at least a minimum amount of testing for your infertility treatment, which should include the following:

Semen analysis
As in a regular semen analysis, the donor specimen should be evaluated according to volume, pH, count, motility, progression, viability, abnormality, and white blood cells. If it fails to meet the minimum qualifications, then the specimen should not be used.
Infectious agent evaluations
Each applicant should be tested for HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen and core antibody, hepatitis C antibody, syphilis, and HTLV-1 antibody. In addition, applicants should be screened for , gonorrhea, mycoplasma, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, and human papillomavirus.
Specimens should be held in quarantine for a minimum of 6 months and donor testing for HIV-1, HIV-2, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C should be completed. Specimens should not be released if this is not done.
Medical and genetic evaluation
It is also recommended that donors undergo a general medical and genetic evaluation. When appropriate, screening for genetic diseases should be undertaken. For donors who are of Jewish descent, carrier testing for Tay-Sachs, Canavan, Gaucher, and breast and ovarian cancer (BRCA-1) gene mutations is recommended. Applicants of French-Canadian ancestry should be screened for Tay-Sachs. Applicants of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean ancestry should be screened for Thalassemia. Applicants of African ancestry should be screened for Sickle Cell Anemia and other hemoglobinpathies. Additionally, screening for cystic fibrosis is recommended.

Specimen types include direct intrauterine insemination (IUI or washed), intracervical insemination (ICI or unwashed), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). IUI specimens have been prepared by washing the fresh ejaculate specimen and removing the seminal contents prior to freezing.

ICI or IVF specimens contain seminal plasma and require additional processing if used in any procedure other than intracervical insemination. ICI or IVF specimens are preferred for an IVF cycle. When a specimen is ordered for IVF infertility treatment, the andrologists of IVF New Jersey will wash and prepare the specimen according to our standards.

It is recommended that at least two vials of sperm be ordered per either IUI or IVF cycle of infertility treatment being undertaken at IVF New Jersey. We recommend the following reputable sperm banks: California Cryobank, Cryobiology, Inc, Cryogenic Laboratories, Fairfax Cryobank, Pacific Reproductive Services and Xytex Corporation. If you would like to receive information regarding either of these sperm banks, please feel free to ask during your visit to our office.
