One of the first steps in the fertility process is selecting an egg donor. Finding Donors

Though many of our egg donors are college students, we seek egg donors from healthy young women in the general population through advertisements in publications. The women who respond are screened by our agency’s staff and egg donor coordinator. Those who pass the initial screening are asked to attend an egg donor seminar at one of our clinics to address the questions and concerns that prospective donors have concerning their role as an egg donor. They also have the opportunity to meet with our physicians, who can answer any questions they have that are not addressed through materials provided at the seminar. Those who are interested in egg donation are required to submit a psychological inventory that screens for a history of mental illness. Prospective donors must also explain why they wish to participate in the egg donation process. Further into the process, the prospective egg donor will be given a more in-depth psychological interview to assess her motivation for becoming a donor, clarify the expectations upon her, and confirm her commitment to egg donation. Our agency’s egg donor coordinator will give her a week to make up her mind, and then she must give her final decision to either become an egg donor or pass.

The Matching Process

Our agency’s egg donor coordinator and director of psychological services use the prospective egg donor’s profile to screen out undesirable donors. The egg donor profile is the compilation of information gathered at the seminar, the psychological inventory, and interviews that the donor had with our staff. Using this data, they match qualified prospective egg donors to infertile couples.

Our egg donation coordinator contacts a couple when a suitable match has been found. The couple reviews the prospective egg donor’s profile, which omits identifying information, and decides whether to accept the match or have our donor coordinator continue the search. If the couple agrees with the match, the prospective donor must complete a more in-depth psychological examination.

After the second psychological interview is completed, the egg donation coordinator meets with the director of psychological services to assess whether the prospective egg donor is a suitable match. Prospective donors who pass this process are contacted to confirm their participation in donating healthy eggs to an infertile couple. Once the prospective egg donor has confirmed her participation, the required paperwork is signed and agreements are made. The donor coordinator contacts the couple to request payment of the necessary fees.

Donor Medical Screening

After the fees from the couple have been processed, the egg donor completes a final medical screening. The screening includes a physical exam and the donor’s full medical history including genetic and infectious diseases and testing. Once this exam is complete, the recipient receives a version of the results that omits all identifying information.
