Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Test for Patients in Canada – Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa

Conception can be difficult for many reasons, including male or female infertility. Couples who have been trying to conceive for more than a year may need to undergo testing to rule out any possible problems such as a blockage in the fallopian tubes or damage to the uterus. The Hysterosalpingogram or HSG Test can detect blockages in the fallopian tubes caused by scarring, polyps, or fibroids in the uterus that may be preventing pregnancy. What is a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Test?

The HSG test uses a special dye to show problems with the uterus and fallopian tubes that can inhibit natural conception. The dye is injected through the vagina and into the uterus, where it flows into the fallopian tubes. An x-ray takes pictures of the area, illuminating the dye as the passes through the reproductive system. If the uterus and fallopian tubes are unblocked, the dye will flow into the tubes. If there is a blockage, the dye will abruptly stop. Caused by scar tissue, polyps, fibroids, or an infection, the blockages can prevent an egg from traveling through the fallopian tubes to the uterus, prevent sperm from reaching the egg, or prevent an embryo from attaching to the wall of the uterus. If these obstructions make the woman’s eggs unviable or make it too risky for her to carry a child to term, egg donation or a surrogate may be an option.
