Sperm Donation at IVF New Jersey
Donor Sperm is a Treatment Option at IVF New Jersey
Donor sperm can be a treatment option for single women, lesbian couples, couples with severe male-factor, or couples where the male partner is a carrier of a genetic disease/defect/anomaly and does not wish to pass along the trait to the potential offspring.
There are several large sperm banks throughout the country, where patients can purchase vials of donor sperm for use with an intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. The sperm banks may offer a variety of options regarding photos, videos, audio tapes and essays to assist in selecting the most suitable donor. As per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, all sperm donors are tested for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and C, Human T-Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV), Syphilis (RPR), Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. Some sperm banks also do chromosomal testing and genetic testing if a donor is of a specific genetic ancestry. All of this testing, as well as psychological screening is done by the sperm bank before the donor is accepted into their donor program.
There are three basic specimen types that can be purchased through the sperm banks: intracervical insemination (ICI), IUI-ready, and IVF-ready. The availability and cost of each specimen varies among the sperm banks, as well as, among the available donors. IVF New Jersey recommends that two vials of ICI-type sperm (the least processed preparation) be ordered for a planned treatment cycle.
Donor sperm can be administered by inseminating the processed sperm via a thin plastic catheter directly into the uterine cavity (intrauterine insemination or IUI), or by inseminating the eggs in a petri dish during the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process. IUI’s can be performed during natural cycles in which ovulation predictor kits are utilized to determine the appropriate day for insemination, or during ovulation induction cycles in which fertility medications are used to stimulate egg development and ovulation.
The following sperm banks are recommended: California Cryobank, Cryobiology Inc., Cryogenic Laboratories, Fairfax Cryobank, Pacific Reproductive Services, and Xytex Corporation..
