Preimplantation genetic diagnosis or PGD is the newest technology provided at the IVF New Jersey. It evolves the IVF process whereby eggs and sperm are brought together, fertilization of the eggs take place and embryos are created. We then take one cell from those embryos and we send it to genetic laboratory that specializes in the diagnosis of genetic abnormalities of the embryos. We then advise as to which embryos are normal and the normal embryos can be transferred back into the uterus of the patient. Who would benefit from this exciting technology? Well certainly patient who have cystic fibrosis or carriers of acystic fibrosis that is the husband and wife are both carriers which will provide a 25% chance that their offspring would have this terrible disease. By doing PGD, we can all but guarantee that their pregnancy will result in birth of a health child.
